يرسم باكين صورة مرعبة للبيروقراطية العمياء والمصابة بجنون العظمة والتي تتمثل قوتها الرئيسية في الشك والبلطجة والغطرسة، يظهر أيضا صراع الأجيال الذي يتطور بوحشية داخل نفس العائلة، وهو مقدمة لصراعات أكثر عنفا في الثورة الثقافية التي يرى باكين أنها تنشأ لا محالة بسبب تجاوزات عادات الصين القديمة التي تمثلها والدته، مرعوبا من هذه الصين الحديثة التي لا تظهر علاماتها إلا في شكل مطالب زوجته الشابة، يتذكر شوين بطريقته تشيان العجوز، بطل الرواية.
