يقدم هذا الكتاب الذي أعده باحثون في جامعة كمبردج، مسحا شاملا للأدب الروسي منذ البدايات وحتى تسعينيات القرن الماضي، أي يشمل، تحديدا، ألف عام بالتمام والكمال (بدءا من عام 1988، عام \"تعميد روسيا\" أو اعتناقها المسيحية وانتهاء بمطلع التسعينيات، تاريخ انهيار النظام السوفييتي). وقد اضطلع بتأليف هذا العمل المؤلف من أحد عشر فصلا أحد عشر باحثا أكاديميا (مؤلف واحد لكل فصل)، إضافة إلى المحرر الرئيس تشارلز أ. موزر، بحيث تناول كل باحث فترة زمنية في تاريخ الأدب الروسي هي في الأساس حقل تخصصه ومجال اهتمامه البحثي، وهم من جنسيات مختلفة-بريطانيون، أمريكيون، سوفييت سابقون وأوروبيون غربيون.
