يتحدث الكتاب عن تاريخ الأفكار السياسية قام بتحليل بعض هذه المذاهب السياسية بالتفصيل بقدر ما أهتممنا بتحديد موقعها في عصر ما وفي مجتمع معين ويراعي الكتاب التاريخ الزمني للأحداث على وجه الإجمال وإنشاء تصنيف في نماذج للمذاهب وإتباع مخطط قائم على التمييز بين التيارات الفكرية وأنه كلما أمعنت في دراسة حقيقة معينة ظهرت هذه التمييزات ضعيفة هشة كما يفرد الكتاب حيزا لا بأس بسعته لمؤلفين ليسوا بمفكرين سياسيين لكن كان لأفكارهم ذيوع مهم في الفترة التي صدرت فيها وبدت لنا على هذا النحو بأنها تسهم في إيضاح حالة المجتمع.
