إن الذكاء العاطفي يعلمنا كيف نغير من أنماط تفكيرنا، ومن طريقة نظرنا إلى الأمور بحيث نولد في نفوسنا أكبر قدر ممكن من المشاعر الإيجابية ولأطول فترة ممكنة، وإن للتفكير علاقة متبادلة مع الشعور، فكثير من المشاعر تتولد في نفوسنا نتيجة لنمط معين من التفكير فإذا غيرنا هذا النمط تبدلت تلك المشاعر، فالإنسان المتفائل يفكر بطريقة النظر إلى النصف المليء من الكأس، وبالتالي يتولد في نفسه شعور التفاؤل والإنسان المتشائم يفكر بطريقة النظر إلى النصف الفارغ من الكأس وبالتالي يتولد في نفسه شعور التشاؤم كما أن الشعور بدوره يؤثر على تفكير الإنسان، فالإنسان المتشائم يكون في حالة من القلق والتوتر لا تمكنه من التفكير الإيجابي أولا تمكنه من التفكير على الإطلاق.
