تنتمي رحلة محمد صادق رفعت باشا، وهو من رجالات الدولة العثمانية الإصلاحيين الذينَ وفَّروا ذخيرةً أيديولوجية أعانت على إستيعاب أسباب التقدم الأوروبي، إلى ما يُعرف بعهد التنظيمات وقد تعددت الكتابات عن أوروبا حينها، وكان آخرها الرّحلة التي نحنُ بصددها، ويصنِّفها معظم الدارسين في خانة \"السياحتنامه\" وليس \"السفارتنامه\" بإعتبار أن صاحبها لم يعيّن سفيراً في إيطاليا بل في فيينا وذهب في مهمة قصيرة المدى إلى إيطاليا.
