تدور أحداث هذه الرواية بعد نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية، في أعوام الحرب الباردة، حول جندي روسي، يدعى وارنيف تسند له مهمة حراسة مستودع عسكري في فيينا في النمسا، ويتلقى أوامر إطلاق النار على من يحاول الدخول إلى المكان، وفي إحدى نوبات حرارته تتقدم نحو بوابة المستودع سيارة مدنية يقودها موظف بريطاني، فيطلق والنيف إشارة تحذير، لكن الرصاصة تقتل الرجل.
