توضح هذا الكتاب الدور الذي قامت به الدولة السلوقية في نشر الحضارة الهلينستية عن طريق بنائها للمدن، وتشجيعها للمستوطنين اليونانيين للهجرة إلى الشرق والعيش فيه، فكان لهم أثر كبير في مزج الحضارة اليونانية مع الحضارة الشرقية العريقة فتكون ما يعرف بالحضارة الهلينستية. واختلفت حدود الدولة السلوقية من وقت لآخر، وقد أتخذ مؤسسها (سلوقس الأول 312 - 281 ق.م) من بلاد الرافدين قاعدة وأساسا لتكوين إمبراطوريته الواسعة، وتلك الأعمال العظيمة التي قامت بها الدولة السلوقية على يد ملوكها تبرر دراسة الموضوع في سيرة وسياسة وأعمال ملوكها الحضارية إلى سقوطها عام 64 ق.م.
