تخوض تيتيو لوكوك في هذا الكتاب صراعا كبيرا مع الأفكار السائدة التي تقوم على قراءة التاريخ قراءة أبوية وذكورية، دون أدنى إشارة إلى دور المرأة في الأحداث التاريخية الكبرى، فالكاتبة ترى أن حرية المرأة ومنزلتها اليوم لم تتحقق بمحض الصدفة بل هي نتيجة لتراكمات تاريخية كبرى خاضت فيها المرأة صراعات وتجارب إنسانية عظيمة، ولكن هذه التجارب في نظر الكاتبة، قد تعرضت للطمس والنسيان ومن هذا المنطلق تأخذنا لوكوك في رحلة تاريخية كبرى، من عصور ما قبل التاريخ إلى اليوم، محاولة أن تبين للقارئ أن حضور المرأة ملازم لحضور الرجل وأنه في فترات زمنية معينة، كان للمرأة اليد الكبرى، في تغيير مجرى التاريخ، وهو نفسه التاريخ، الذي شطبها ومحاها من مدونته.
