يشكل هذا الكتاب محاولة شاملة أولى لكتابة تاريخ ردود الفعل البريطانية تجاه النشاط الفرنسي في الخليج العربي، في حقبة زاخرة بالأحداث ابتدأت من 1798م وانتهت في 1810م. وقد تبدو هذه السنوات من تأريخ الخليج، بالنسبة إلى ما عاصرها من صراع دولي واسع شمل أوروبا وأجزاء من آسيا، أقل إثارة، ولكنها مع ذلك ذات أهمية كبرى، إذ تمثل جانبا بارزا من تأريخنا الحديث. ففي خلال تلك السنوات، تقرر المستقبل السياسي لعلاقة بريطانيا بالخليج ببطء ولكن بوضوح. ومع هذه الدراسة تركزت على تتبع المواقف البريطانية، فإن عناية خاصة وجهت للمخططات والعمليات الفرنسية المضادة التي أسهمت في تغيير مواقف بريطانيا وحورتها.
