يتناول الكتاب مذكرات سليمان شفيق ابن علي كمالي باشا، ولد سليمان في مدينة أرضروم بشرق تركيا 1860-1946 م، ومما لا شك فيه أن عمله وإقامته في البلاد العربية فترة طويلة قد جعلاه أكثر معرفة بالبلاد وأهلها، إذ وثق علاقته بكثير من زعماء ورجالات العرب، وجاءت نظرته إلى العرب من خلال كتاباته وتصرفاته نظرة عقلانية منصفة ويظهر أن بداية علاقة سليمان شفيق باشا بالملك عبد العزيز رحمه الله، وإعجابه وتقديره له؛ كانت عندما تعين واليا على البصرة في عام 1913 م، ولذا فبعد مضي أشهر قليلة على قدومه إلى الحجاز صدر الأمر الملكي من الملك عبد العزيز بتعيين سليمان شفيق باشا كمالي مفتشا عاما لكافة الدوائر الرسمية فكان واسع الثقافة والاطلاع، ولذا فقد كان مهتما بالكتابة والتأليف، وكانت رحلته ومذكراته من المصادر ذات الأهمية للباحثين في التاريخ، لاحتوائها كثير من المعلومات والأحداث التي عايشها.
