تدور الرواية حول \"دونالد تيلمان\" أستاذ وعالم جينات في التاسعة والثلاثين من عمره طويل، رشيق، ذكي، صاحب منصب مرموق نسبيا، ودخل فوق المتوسط يوفره منصبه كأستاذ في الجامعة. ومنطقي أن يكون جذابا في نظر قطاع عريض من الفتيات والسيدات. \"دون\" يبحث عن زوجة لكنه لا يبحث عنها بالطريقة المتعارف عليها خصوصا بعد أن فشلت كل الطرق المنطقية في عثوره على زوجة تناسبه. جرب العديد من اللقاءات التي انتهت نهايات مثل محاولته إقناع رفيقته بأن كل نكهات الآيس كريم لا فرق بينها في الطعم. قرر \"دون\" أن يتوقف عن البحث عن زوجة عن طريق المواعدات التي يدبرها له صديقه وزوجته. و بدأ في عمل استبيان به العديد من الأسئلة الغريبة التي ستحدد نتيجته بدقة من تصلح زوجة له.
