تهتم النظريات اللغوية الحديثة بدراسة الحجاج في الخطاب خلال مرحلة محددة من مراحل التداول، وهي المرحلة التي يعمد فيها المرسل إلى إقامة الحجّة وبنائها وفق وسائل لغوية، مهما اختلفت طبيعة المواقف وتعددت أنماط الخطابات التي يتواصل بها مع مرسل إليه، قد يكون مخالفا له في الرأي، أو شاكا في مصداقية المعرفة المنقولة إليه، أو جاهلا لحيثيات الموضوع الذي يبنى على أساسه الخطاب، ولكن المرسل قد يتعدى هذا المستوى ؛ أي مستوى بناء الحجة إلى مستوى بلاغة الحجة، إذا كان خطيبا يروم أعلى مراتب الحجاج، إذ تقع على عاتقه مسؤولية التأثير في متلق محدد وفق خطاب وظيفته الأولى الإقناع، ودعائمه الأدلة والبراهين.
