الجبال والصحاري والأراضي العشبية أنظمة، يتميز كل منها بمناخ وغطاء نباتي، وحيوانات معينة، وعلى الرغم من ذلك فإن هذه الأنظمة يرتبط بعضها ببعض إرتباطا وثيقا، فغالبا ما تكون الجبال حدودا الأحمر حاري، وتتكون الأراض مــي العشبية بين السلاسل الجبلية، لذا تؤثر الجبال في مناخ المناطق الصحراوية والأراضي العشبية المجاورة لها، وقد أدت الأنشطة البشرية إلى الإخلال في التوازن بين هذه الأنظمة البيئية، فمثلا قطعت الأشجار في بعض المناطق التطوير الأراضي للزراعة أو الإسكان أو الترفيه، ويرى معظم العلماء أن الإحترار العالمي الناجم عن الأنشطة البشرية يعد الخطر الرئيسي على هذه الأنظمة.
