يعود بنا هذا الكتاب نصف قرن ونيف إلى الوراء ليلقي الضوء على حقبة مهمة من تاريخ الأمة العربية وبخاصة في أقطارها المشرقية حيث المناخ الشعبي كان لا يزال يعيش ذروة تطلعه إلى الوحدة والقوى السياسية الوحدوية في ذروة قوتها وتأثيرها بينما التجارب الوحدوية بين تلك القوى الممسكة بالسلطة آنذاك تمر بتجارب ومخاضات صعبة لم تجن منها إلا إضاعة الفرص وخيبات الأمل ويطل هذا الكتاب على هذه الموضوعات وغيرها من خلال معايشة سفير الجمهورية العربية المتحدة في بغداد (1963- 1965) أمين هويدي.
