يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن المجتمع والحكومة والاقتصاد في صدر الإسلام ويتناول نظام الحكم في عهد عمر بن الخطاب (الخلافة، الولاية) ثم تكوين المجتمع ووضع القبائل العربية ثم تناول النظام المالي في عصر الخلفاء الراشدين ثم انتقل إلى موضوع الفتنة وبدأ بنقد المصادر التي تناولت اليمن في الفتنة ثم الروايات القديمة الجامعة لأخبار الفتن مع نقدها وبدأ برواية أبي سعيد ثم رواية سهم الأزدي ورواية الأحنف بن قيس ثم تحدث عن الأسس التي تستنتج من هذه الروايات الثلاث ويتناول الكتاب الحديث عن الخصام بين علي ومعاوية والعوامل التي أدت إلى انتقال الحكم من الراشدين إلى الأمويين.
