يتناول الكتاب أنه بما أن الطبيعة تعد الميدان الأبرز والأساس الذي عرفه الإنسان وتأثر به وأثر فيه، جاءت هذه الدراسة بهدف تسليط الضوء على ما تركوه من مأثر أدبية عكست روح الطبيعة بتفاصيلها وكافة تجلياتها، بإستعمال المنهج التحليلي والوصفي في تفسيرها عند الوقوف عليها، أي تحليل علة وجود الظواهر الطبيعية ومظاهرها أو حدوثها كما هي في الواقع، فضلا عن تفسير إنطباعهم عنها ونظرتهم لها وأسباب ذلك ونتائجه، ومن ثم وصف الظاهرة الطبيعة وصفا دقيقا وبيان خصائصها بالوقوف على جوانب المنفعة والضرر فيها وبيان ما تحمله من خير وشر، وإنعكاسه على حياة ونتاج الإنسان العراقي القديم سواء في معيشته وأفكاره وعلى منجزه الفكري والحضاري.
