يعد علما من أعلام القرن التاسع وأوائل القرن العاشر الهجري، قدم للمكتبة العربية والإسلامية أكثر من تسع مئة كتاب ما بين كراسة أو مجلد أو مجلدات. رجل لم يسلم من خصومه في حياته ولا بعد مماته. رجل يرى أن توثيق العلوم، والمعارف من آكد الواجبات، وأن بركة العلم عزو القول إلى قائله، فقيل عنه : جماعة، حاطب ليل، رجل : كان يخاف على كتبه وعلى جهوده من السرقة والاختلاس، فاتهم السرقة والسطو على جهود الآخرين.
