لقد كان ولا يزال لأدباء كل عصر الدور الأهم في التوثيق لحياة شعوبهم، وكذا كانت حال شعراء الجاهلية الذين استطاعوا أن ينقلوا إلينا صورة متقنة لحيواتهم فإذا ما ذكر امرؤ القيس ذكر الولع بالخيل والنوق والصيد، ومتاع الدنيا من نساء وخمر، وشجاعة حنكتها التجارب ؛ لم يكن لصاحبها أن يترك ثأر أبيه الذي قتل غدرا، فتبدلت بذلك حياته وتبدل شعره وحيث إنه بلغ من الإجادة ما لم يبلغه غيره، فقد أثيرت حوله الأقاويل، حتى إنهم أنكروا وجوده بالمرة ؛ إلا أن من يستقرئ تاريخ الأدب العربي، يدرك قيمته كعلم أدبي في مصاف النوابغ يذكر أن هذا الكتاب يأتي ضمن سلسلة عمدة الأديب التي اختطها محمد سليم الجندي بهدف إحياء التراث الأدبي العربي وأعلامه، غير أن معظم هذه السلسلة بقى مخطوطا ولم ير النور بعد.
