يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة تاريخية حول اكتشاف النفط والغاز في البحرين، وحول إمكانية نفاده، الأمر الذي استدعى البحث عن موارد أخرى لتحقيق التوازن الاقتصادي وبقدر ما تخالف البحرين وصفها كدولة ريعية ليس على أساس أفتقارها للموارد بل لعدم قدرتها ومنذ فترة طويلة على تحويل هذه الموارد إلى نتاج يستفاد منه اجتماعيا وسياسيا كما لم يدم فيها طويلا أفق الثروة النفطية اللامحدودة كذلك لم يدم أفق الإنسجام الاجتماعي المتولد عن مد اقتصادي متنام وعدم الإنسجام هذا أدى حسب المؤلف إلى إنتفاضة الرابع عشر من شباط/ فبراير 2011 التي شكلت إطارا يمكن من خلاله رؤية الحلقة الأخيرة من تاريخ سياسي مضطرب.
