تتألف هذه الرواية من سبع حلقات أحداث روائية قد يتوهم القارئ أنها قصص قصيرة فحجم كل حلقة قد يصل إلى حجم قصة قصيرة لكن البناء في كل حلقة هو بناء روائي يصور مرحلة من حياة بايارد سارتوريس وأحداثا تقع في حياته وحياة رفيقه في الأسرة الزنجي نجو إضافة إلى عدد من أفراد أسرة بايارد أبوه وجدته والزنوج التابعين لهذه الأسرة أثناء الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية بعد نصر الشمالين اليانكيين على الجنوبيين وتحرير العبيد الزنوج الذين من أصل فريقي فتتجمع هذه الحلقات في ذهن المتلقي لتنسج البناء الكامل للرواية دون تفاصيل غير ضرورية لهذا البناء كما وأن الراوي لهذه الأحداث وهو بايارد سارتوريس نفسه.
