يقسم المنهاجي كتابه إلى مقدمة وخاتمة، جاعلا المقدمة على فصلين والفصل الأول فيما قيل من نتائج الأفكار في محاسن العذار، وفيه لخص المنهاجي طرائق الشعراء في تناول العذار، وهم عنده أربعة أقسام والقسم الأول من هام بالمليح قبل بلوغه، وانفرد في وصف محاسنه قبل بلوغ ثمره والقسم الثاني وهذا القسم الأعم لدى الشعراء جميعا، إذ يهيمون بالمعذرين حال ظهور عذارهم والقسم الثالث الهيام بالمرد والمعذرين وذوي اللحى، ومن علاهم المشيب القسم الرابع من يؤوب بالعذار عن حبه، ويتوب إلى ربه والفصل الثاني في ذكر ما قيل في المعنى البديع الغريب، في كامل اللحية وناتفها وحالقها والخاتمة في ذم العذار والإقلاع عن الإصرار.
