يصنف صيد الأسماك في ليبيا ضمن 4 درجات تعتمد على الحجم والجودة وموعد بداية موسم التكاثر : الدرجة الأولى : تشمل أسماكا مهمة تجاريا كالفروج، التونة، البوري، المرجان، وغيرها. بعضها يحدد بوزن مثل الأوراتا (>250 جم)، الدرجة الثانية والثالثة والرابعة : تحوي أسماكا أقل قيمة أو حجما، وتنطبق عليها شروط صيد خاصة بالوزن، مع التنظيم حسب مواسم التكاثر لضمان الاستدامة، يمنع صيد بعض الأنواع في فترات التكاثر لتفادي استنزاف المخزون، ويحدد الحد الأدنى للطول أو الوزن حسب النوع لضبط حجم الأسماك المصطادة.
