يحكي الكتاب كيف تأسست دولة الجنوب العربي بعد إعلان الاستقلال في يناير 1967، معتمدة على تجربة سياسية مدنية وعلمانية استثنائية في المنطقة، لكنها تعرضت لتحديات عبر تجربة استنساخ الاشتراكية دون ملاءمة للحس المحافظ للمجتمع الجنوبي، في ظل الحرب الباردة، تحول الجنوب لتجربة الدولة الاشتراكية «بحجم صغير»، حتى توافق مع الشمال في اتحاد عام 1990 بقيادة علي سالم البيض، الرؤية المستقبلية تعتمد على بناء دولة فدرالية ديمقراطية مدنية جامعة، ذات مسؤولية شبابية، وتبتعد عن الصراعات القبلية والدينية.
