تعد كارين هورني رائدة في علم النفس النسوي، وكمدرسة محدثة للسلوك البشري رفضت المفاهيم الفرويدية المهيمنة مثل حسد القضيب بدلا من ذلك، مؤكدا على العوامل الاجتماعية والثقافية في تشكيل شخصية المرأة، وقدمت مبدأ حسد الرحم كعكس لهذا المفهوم، كما حددت عشرة احتياجات عصابية كردود فعل على القلق الأساسي في العلاقات، وعرضت ثلاثة أنماط تعامل : الانطلاق نحو الآخرين، والانكفاء، والمواجهة ركزت أيضا على أهمية الوعي والذات الحقيقية مقابل الزيف النفسي، رافضة التركيز الفريدي على الدوافع اللاواعية يشكل هذا الكتاب حجر زاوية في فهم أعمق لطبيعة المرأة من منظور نفسي نوي-فرويديان، ويعتبر أحد الأسس لنظرية علم نفس نسوي نقدية.
