يبدأ إريك كمبكا مذكراته بوصف واجباته كعضو في طاقم هتلر الشخصي في السنوات التي سبقت الحرب، حيث كان يقود الفوهرر في جميع أنحاء ألمانيا وخارجها، ويرافقه في التجمعات، إلا أن جوهر مذكراته يغطي حياته مع هتلر في قبو الفوهرر في برلين،خلال هذه الفترة، كان مسؤولا عن أسطول نقل من السيارات، وكثيرا ما كان يقود سيارات مثل شبير أو كيسلرينغ في جولات تفتيشية إلى المناطق الساخنة على الجبهة، وفي مارس 1945، رافق الفوهرر في جولته التفتيشية الأخيرة على الجبهة.
