منذ عام 1937 وحتى نهايات الحرب في 1945، خدم نيكولاوس فون بيلو كمساعد شخصي لهتلر في شؤون اللوفتفافه، فكان حاضرا في الاجتماعات الحربية بمقرات القيادة، وشاهدا مباشرا على قرارات استراتيجية الإدارة العليا، مثل غزوات بولندا وروسيا ومشروع الصواريخ V‑1 وV‑2 يروي تفاصيل محاولة اغتيال هتلر في يوليو 1944 وتأثيرها نفسه على القيادة العليا كما كان آخر من غادر أحد المحيطين المقربين إلى هتلر، إذ نجح في الخروج من مقر القيادة في برلين قبل الانتحار واحتراق البيرغرونك في 30 أبريل 1.
