يقدم لنا هذا الكتاب روسو وتصوره للفلسفة السياسية من خلال عرض تاريخي مطول انطلق فيه من الفرد باعتباره كائنا يعيش في البرية بشكل جوال منفرد. وقد كان بذلك إنسانا متوحشا يبحث فقط عن إشباع غرائزه الطبيعية بأبسط الطرق المتوفرة. ينتقل بعد ذلك روسو في عرضه الفلسفي، إلى اللحظة التي طرأ فيها التحول الجذري، والتي انتقل فيها الإنسان من حالة الطبيعة، إلى بداية الألفة وتكوين علاقات بسيطة مع أقرانه، وبذلك ظهور الأسرة باعتبارها نموذجا مصغرا للمجتمع البشري القديم. هذه الأسرة ستشكل لاحقا، إضافة إلى أسر أخرى، اجتماعا بشريا بدائيا غير منظم مما أدى إلى تسلل فكرة الملكية الخاصة وتأسيس المجتمع المدني.
