تناولت الباحثة الشائعات على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي من منظور الجمهور المصري واختصاصيي الإعلام، مستخدمة منهج المسح الميداني وتحليل مضمون تقارير المركز الإعلامي لمجلس الوزراء لعام 2020. كشفت الدراسة أن الشائعات الاجتماعية كانت الأكثر انتشارا بنسبة تقارب 38% من مجموع القضايا المتناولة، تلتها شائعات التعليم وغيرها، وقد اتسمت هذه الشائعات بأنها لا تحتاج لمستوى ثقافي عال لتداولها أو تصديقها، وتعتمد على عنصر الغموض أو تصدير جزء من الحقيقة، وتستغل التوترات والأزمات الاجتماعية وتروج غالبا بأسلوب إخباري أو استفزازي أو ساخر، مع استخدام قوي لوسائل التخويف والتحذير خاصة خلال جائحة كورونا.
