بدأ المؤلف رحلته من فضوله لسبب تسمية شارع \"النادي\" في منطقة الجيزة، ليكتشف أن الإسم جاء من لقب أول من سكن الشارع، فأطلق اسمه عليه، ومن هنا انطلقت فكرة الاستقصاء لأصول أسماء الشوارع والحارات في القاهرة والجيزة وبقية مصر، يغوص الكتاب في سرد قصص وأصل أسماء شوارع وأحياء العاصمة، بدءا من أحياء القاهرة التاريخية حتى ضواحي الجيزة، كما يكشف خلفيات وأحداث تاريخية وربما أهلية أو دينية وراء التسمية. يقدم معلومات وتفاصيل مثل قصة الأمير جهاركس الخليلي الذي وقف نحو أرغفة خبز للفقراء، ومنها اسم \"خان الخليلي\"، وأيضا أحداث وراء تسمية بوابين مثل \"باب النصر\" و\"باب الفتوح\" في سور القاهرة الفاطمية.
