هذا الكتاب في تاريخ العصر العباسي الأول، تناول به المؤلف وجهه السياسي والإداري والمالي، عرض فيه وجهات نظر المؤرخين الكبار ثم حلل الأحداث برواياتها المختلفة وفاضل بينها، ثم أبدى وجهة نظر خاصة بعد عرض الدليل. كما تناول بالعرض الدعوة العباسية الأولى في شتى نواحيها ومعنى الإنتقال من العصر الأموي إلى العصر العباسي، معرفا عن كبار رجالات هذا العصر : أبو العباس، أبو جعفر المنصور، المهدي والهادي، هارون الرشيد، الأمين والمأمون والمعتصم بالله، وأفرد الفصل العاشر لدراسة نظام الضرائب والنظام الإقتصادي وهو قسم مهمل من تاريخ العصر العباسي الأول، مما يجعل لهذا الكتاب ميزة خاصة بين الكتب التاريخية. إن هذا الكتاب صدرت طبعته الأولى عام 1945، ويعاد نشره كما صدر أول مرة لأهميته بين الكتب الحديثة.
