تدور أحداثها في مصر القديمة لتعالج قضايا فكرية ووجودية خالدة. يتمحور العمل حول الصراع بين \"الشك\" و\"اليقين\"، وبين السلطة الدينية والوعي الفردي. يستعرض بريو من خلال شخصية الكاهن الشاب \"ساتني\" محاولة التمرد على الأساطير والخرافات السائدة في عصره سعياً وراء الحقيقة المجردة، لكنه يصطدم بحاجة الشعب الماسة إلى \"الإيمان\" كملجأ نفسي ومبرر للوجود. يناقش المؤلف ببراعة جدلية العلاقة بين المعرفة والسعادة، وما إذا كان كشف الحقيقة للناس يحررهم أم يسلبهم طمأنينتهم الزائفة. تتسم المسرحية بعمق فلسفي يمزج بين النقد الاجتماعي والتساؤل الروحي، مما جعلها عملاً عالمياً تُرجم إلى لغات عدة (ومنها العربية بتوقيع طه حسين)، لتظل مرجعاً في دراسة الدراما الهادفة التي تحفز العقل وتناقش جوهر الاعتقاد البشري.
