يتحدث الكتاب عن علم الغيب عند مفكري الإسلام والتنبؤ الطبيعي عندهم وإدراك الغيب عند أهل الكشف الصوفي ومن إليهم والرؤيا الصادقة وعلم الكهانة والعرافة الفأل والطيرة وعلم أحكام النجوم والفراسة والسحر وموقع أهل الشرع منها، حيث ظهر الميل عند البشر إلى اكتشاف الغيب والمحجوب منذ وجدوا على ظهر الأرض، لأن مرد هذا الميل إلى طبيعة البشر النزاعة بفطرتها إلى معرفة المجهول، وهي معرفة تراد لذاتها أصلا وإن جرت العادة باتخاذها أداة لبلوغ غايات ما، ومن هنا كان التنبؤ بالغيب مثار افتتان الشعوب في كل زمان ومكان. وليس ينفي هذا ما يلحظ من أثر انتشار \"العلم\" في إضعاف هذا الميل عند الناس, إذ ليس العلم في كل صوره إلا محاولة ترمي إلى اكتشاف المجهول، فلا يغير اختلاف المناهج وتباين المقاصد من هذه الحقيقة كثيرا.
