يتحدث الكتاب عن شامبليون في مصر حيث في أواخر حياته القصيرة تمكن جان فرانسوا شامبليون من أن يقوم برحلته إلى مصر والتي ظل يحلم بها طوال عشرين عاما وجاءت هذه الرحلة بعد أن تمكن شامبليون من حل طلاسم الكتابة الهيروغليفية ومن هنا كانت هذه الرحلة منعطفا هاما فى التعرف على تاريخ مصر القديمة وكانت عملية المسح والتسجيل الشاملة لآثار مصر القديمة والتى قام بها شامبليون أثناء رحلته ذات قيمة أهم وأشمل من تلك التى قام بها علماء الحلمة الفرنسية الذين رافقوا نابوليون إلى مصر فالنسبة لهؤلاء العلماء كانت الهيروغليفية مجرد نقوش على الصخور لا تقول شيئا أما بالنسبة لشامبليون فإنها كانت لغة مقروءة تقول الكثير عن تاريخ مصرالقديمة وعن حياة وديانة وأفكار المصريين القدماء.
