أختار المؤلف موضوع السياسة الأمريكية في منطقة الخليج بين سنتي 1941 و1947 لدراسته هذه، محاولا إبراز أهمية هذه المرحلة في تاريخ منطقة الخليج مستندا على أسباب عديدة لاختيار هذه الحقبة الزمنية إن سنة 1941 التي يبدأ بها الكتاب شهدت أحداثا مهمة تمثلت في حركة الكيلاني في العراق والاحتلال البريطاني السوڤيتي لإيران (أغسطس 1941) ودخول الولايات المتحدة الحرب إلى جانب الحلفاء ضد المحور (ديسمبر 1941) أما سنة 1941 التي ينتهي عندها الكتاب فقد شهدت صدور ما عرف بمبدأ ترومان وانتهاء فصل المواجهة الأمريكية السوڤيتيى في إيران عندما رفض البرلمان الإيراني، المصادقة على اتفاقية النفط السوڤيتية-الإيرانية كما جرت خلالها المحادثات الأمريكية-البريطانية السرية المعروفة باسم محادثات البنتاجون بهدف تنسيق سياسة الدولتين في منطقة الشرق الأوسط.
