تكمن أهمية هذه الموسوعة في أنها تمثل الجانب الآخر من صورة الرحلات التي قام بها الرحالون الغربيون إلى فلسطين خلال قرون طويلة ساهموا من خلالها في تكوين وعي معين تجاه فلسطين مستقى بشكل أو بآخر من الوعي الديني لمسيحي واليهودي والذي يمثل فيما يمثله جانبا واحد من الصورة غير أن الأمر بات أكثر خطورة بعد حملة نابليون على فلسطين آخر القرن الثامن عشر، حيث بدأ نوع جديد من الرحلات مرتبط بشكل أو بآخر بالمشاريع الاستعمارية التي كانت تعد في دوائر القوى العظمى في ذلك الوقت مستخدمة إنشاء وطن قومي لليهود على أرض فلسطين في معاندة غريبة متنكرة لحقائق التاريخ والجغرافيا والمنطق.
