يدور موضوع الكتاب حول المذاهب الأدبية الكبرى في فرنسا وذلك في الفترة الممتدة من سنة 1550 إلى سنة 1930 أي من اليوم الذي اتصل فيه رونسار بالأعمال الأدبية القديمة وأدرك ضرورة إيجاد مذهب شعري إلى اليوم الذي بدا فيه أن المذهب السريالي يود أن يقضي على مفهوم الفن في سبيل الاستقصاء النفسي ولم يستبعد الباحث بعض النصوص لفاليري أو لبريتون وإن كانت تعود في تاريخها إلى ما بعد سنة (1930) وذلك لما لها من أهمية في عرض الفكرة التي كونت قبل هذا التاريخ ولأنها تزيدها وضوحا.
