يتناول كتاب الرأسمالية والاشتراكية والديمقراطية، حيث أنه هو من أبرز الكتب الخاصة بالنظرية الاجتماعية في القرن العشرين. ومنذ صدوره في العام 1942 احتل مرتبة مميزة في الأوساط العلمية فكتبت آنذاك مجلة New English Weekly أنه سيبقى كتابا مهما لا يستطيع أي باحث في السوسيولوجيا والاقتصاد أن يظل من دون معرفة به. كان جوزيف أ. شومبيتر يرى أن بذور انهيار الرأسمالية كامنة في داخلها هي نفسها، وفي الوقت ذاته كان ناقدا قاسيا للاشتراكية المركزية، وهذا ما أثار جدالا واسعا حول الكتاب والمؤلف معا، إلا أن شومبيتر الذي رفض أن يكون مدافعا عن الرأسمالية وعن الاشتراكية المركزية، شق طريقا أخرى ممهدا السبيل أمام تفكير جديد بالحركات الاجتماعية وبدورها المتصاعد في حياتنا المعاصرة.
