كتبت ما كتبته في هذا الكتاب ؛ ابتغاء الإحماض عند استراحة الخاطر، من البحث والقراءة في مسائل الشريعة والتأليف فيها وفي التفسير واللغة وغيرها من العلوم، وللذهن أحوال مختلفة، ويصلح في كل حال ما لا يصلح في حال أخرى، وأحسب أن عامة أذهان الناس-لا سيما أهل العلم-كذلك، وإن كثيرا من الناس عن أذهانهم لغافلون إلى شوق فإن للذهن من الأحوال ما يشتاق فيه مرة إلى الحفظ، وتارة يعرض له شيء سميته بالجوع الذهني، وهو تشوقه إلى تفكيك المسائل المعقدة، والبحث في الأمور الغامضة، وتارة يود أن يريح نفسه ليدع الخيال يسبح في آماله، وآونة إلى أخبار العلماء السابقين.
