لقد تغيرت قوانين الجمال بحسب الحقب، ويبرز هذا الكتاب تحولاتها. كما يصف تاريخ الجمال هذا ما يعجب أو ما لا يعجب في الجسد، ضمن ثقافة وزمن محددين : أي الطلة والقسمات المجملة، والأعطاف اللافتة أو المنتقصة، ووسائل التجميل المعاد تقويمها. ولا شك أن المتخيل يأخذ في هذا التاريخ دورا يتماشى مع القيم السائدة في كل فترة من الفترات. لم يكف الجمال عن غبراز شخصية الأفراد، وفي الوقت ذاته كان يظهر التباينات القائمة بين الفئات الاجتماعية والأنماط والأجيال. ولأن الجمال موضوع مثير للقلق أو التفاخر أمام المرآة، فهو أيضا مرآة المجتمعات.
