هذا العمل ترجمة عربية لكتاب جون ستيوارت ميل النفعية المنشور في الجزء العاشر ضمن الأعمال الكاملة لجون ستيوارت ميل تحت عنوان محاولات في الأخلاق والدين والمجتمع ويندرج الكتاب ضمن النظرية التي أسسها جيريمي بنثام التي تعتبر اليوم من الشروط الضرورية لفهم الفلسفة الأخلاقية المعاصرة. في بداية القرن العشرين تم إعادة تأهيل النفعية من خلال كتاب إيلي هاليفي الموسوم تكون الراديكالية الفلسفية الذي أصبح بدوره من الكتب المعتمدة في دراسة النفعية في البلدان الأنجلوساكسونية.
