يتألف هذا الكتاب من 13 رسالة، كان بعث بها إميل زولا يوميا إلى صحيفة \"لو سيمافور\" في مارسيليا، وهي تروي، من وجهة نظره، وعبر مشاهداته اليومية، الأيام الأخيرة من حصار باريس، قبل أن تسقط \"الكومونة\". هذه الأيام عرفت باسم \"الأسبوع الدامي\" وهو شهد الكثير من أعمال العنف والقتل والتدمير والحرائق. لكن وسط ذلك كله، لا بد أن نلاحظ حب الكاتب لمدينته ورفضه تدميرها تحت أي مبرر. لذلك قد يتفاجأ كثيرون من موقف زولا من \"الكومونة\" ومن دفاعه عن السلطة يومها، إذ إنه الكاتب الذي جاءت رواياته لتتحدث عن العمال والمعدمين والفقراء، أي بمعنى آخر، جاءت لتقف ضد السلطة السائدة آنذاك، من دون أن ننسى بالطبع موقفه (في أواخر حياته) من قضية دريفوس، ورسالته الشهيرة إلى رئيس الجمهورية في مطلع القرن العشرين، ما دفعه إلى اختيار المنفى ويذهب إلى العيش في لندن.
