ديوان الأدب للفارابي أول معجم عربي مرتب بحسب الأبنية وبالعودة إلى مضمون هذا الديوان نجد أنه جاء منصفا بالإيجاز لأن صاحبه تجنب التوسع والإطالة بالابتعاد عن المسائل الفقهية والكلامية والاعتدال في المسائل النحوية والبلاغية والعروضية. كما واقتصد في ذكر الشواهد وترك شرح الكلمات الواضحة وقد استفاد من الكتب اللغوية والنوادر والمجاميع اللغوية، كالغريب المصنف لأبي عبيد وإصلاح المنطق لابن السكيت وأدب الكاتب لابن قتيبة والكتاب لسيبويه.
