الجغرافيا السياسية فرع حديث من فروع الجغرافيا البشرية يتناول دراسة الدولة أو الإقليم السياسي والحدود السياسية لهذه الدول أو الأقاليم وما يرتبط بها من ظاهرات سياسية وذلك في إطار مكاني، أما الجيوبولتيكا فتقوم برسم تصورات مستقبلية على ضوء تفاعلات المكان الجغرافي والشكل السائد في الإستراتيجية العسكرية ولهذا يتردد دائما مصطلح البرية والبحرية والجوية وبما أن الجيوبولتيكا في أساسها خطة للمستقبل السياسي لإقليم أو قارة أو العالم، فإنها أقل موضوعية من الجغرافيا السياسية، لكنها ضرورة متلازمة مع الفكر السياسي في عصر القوميات والإستراتيجيات والعولمة للسيطرة على العالم أو جزء منه.
