في البدء نود أن نؤكد على أن لـ\"بيت الحكمة العباسي\" جذوره التي تضرب في أعماق التاريخ، أي في تراث العراق القديم أيام السومريين والبابليين والآشوريين هنا في بلاد بابل وفي العصر البابلي القديم، أي ابتداءا ومن حدود عام 2000 ق. م. شهد العراق انبثاق واحدة من أقدم الحركات العلمية والتعليمية في الشرق الأدنى القديم متمثلة بعمل دؤوب على جمع وتدوين التراث السومري حرصا على حفظه وخوفا من ضياعه، بعد أن أصبحت اللغة السومرية في طريقها إلى الانقراض بعد سقوط سلالة أور الثالثة وهي آخر سلالة سومرية حاكمة في التاريخ في حدود 2006 ق. م.
