يناقش هذا الكتاب ظهور فكرة السحر عند الإنسان البدائي وتطورها حتى ظهور الأديان الإبراهيمية التي كان لها موقف حاسم ضد السحر. وكيف أن التفكير السحري في عادات العرب الجاهليين ومعتقداتهم انعكس على الدين الإسلامي النابع من هذه البيئة. فظهر السحر في نصوصه وتشريعاته وطقوسه وأساطيره، وكانت الكهانة أبرز تهمة تعرض لها الرسول في حياته، فيرصد الكتاب دوافع هذه التهمة من خلال تحليل سلوكيات وأقوال وتوجيهات الرسول الصادرة إما دفعا او جلبا، إنكارا أو إقرارا لقوى سحرية. ولعل الخطوة الجديدة في هذا الكتاب هي إعادة النظر في الروايات والألفاظ الإسلامية على ضوء النقوش السبئية وأساطير اليمن القديم. كما يتناول الكتاب مسألة العلاقة بين السحر والعلوم الطبيعية من طب وفلك وكيمياء، وعلاقتهما بالنزاعات السياسية والمذهبية، وكيف كان للعلوم السحرية دور إيجابي في تشكيل المعالم الأولى للمنهج العلمي عند العرب قبل أن ينضج في أوروبا.
