يركز هذا الكتاب بصفة خاصة على هذه القضية (الأخلاق) إذ يخيطها عبد الرحمن في نسيج اشتباكه الخطابي مع المشكلات المركزية التي ترزح تحتها الحداثة في الغرب والبلاد الإسلامية (بحسب إشارة عبد الرحمن) على السواء وبالنظر إلى الغرب وبلاد الإسلام لا باعتبارها دالات جغرافية وإنما تشكلات معرفية من الدرجة الأولى فالكتابة عن أي شيء مركزي يعني أيضا عدم الكتابة عن أشياء أخرى كثيرة قد يكون بعضها مهما ولكن تلزم إزاحته إلى الهامش ويتناول هذا الكتاب الخلايا الحيوية التي تجعل مشروع عبد الرحمن ما هو عليه والتي إن غيرنا تكوينه الداخلي يصير ذلك المشروع مختلفا إختلافا جوهريا عما نعرفه عنه الآن.
