في هذا الكتاب يحاول الفيلسوف الإنجليزي الأصل ولتر ستيس أن يقدم إجابات عن تلك الأسئلة الشائكة المتعلقة بالأخلاق والتساؤل عما إن كانت نسبية أم مطلقة وما يميز هذا الكتاب في الأساس هو إبتعاده عن اللغة الأكاديمية الصعبة واستخدامه للغة فلسفية بسيطة بالإضافة إلى وضوح وجلاء الأفكار، ولا يسعنا في هذا الكتاب ألا نلاحظ نزعته الإنسانية الأصيلة ومحاولته إعادة تأسيس فلسفة الأخلاق على أساس صلب أمام تيارات النسبية الجارفة التي جنحت إليها الفلسفة في القرن العشرين.
