إن علم الجمال هو علم الظاهرة الجمالية وما تخصيصه بالجمال سوى نوع من دلالة الجزء على الكل أما الكل فهو مجمل المفهومات والتجارب والخبرات والأذواق والفنون والأشكال والآراء الجمالية أي كل ما يدخل في الظاهرة الجمالية موضوعا وذوقا وفنا وطبيعة ومجتمعا وشكلا ودلالة على السواء وإن تحية الوداع التي يطلقها عالم الجمال الفرنسي جان ماري شيفر تجاه علم الجمال وإنما هي توديع لطريقة محددة في الدرس الجمالي أو أنها توديع للمذهب الجمالي أو للمذهبية الجمالية التي تعني الانطلاق من تصورات مسبقة للجمال والفن ومحاكمتهما وفق تلك التصورات.
