يستخلص أسد من دراسة تلك القضايا أن العلماني لا يمكن أن ينظر إليه كنقيض أو كوريث للدين (الذي يعاد تشكيله كخطاب وممارسات من كل عصر لآخر)، كذلك لا يمكن أن ينظر إليه كالوجه الآخر للعقلاني أو الرشيد، فإنما العلماني توصيف له تاريخ متعدد الطبقات ويضرب في الجذور إلى تشكل الحداثة وما قبلها وما أنتجته من مفاهيم وممارسات يتقاطع بعضها مع الديني. وعلى أساس هذا الإفتراض، يحاول الفصل الأخير المطول في الكتاب عن إعادة تشكل القانون والأخلاق في مصر في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين أن يقدم نموذجاً لعمليات العلمنة كما بدت في ساحة تشكل القانوني والأخلاقي في مصر الكولونيالي.
