تناول الكتاب حيث أنه قبل سنوات خلت، كانت سفن الهند الشرقية الهولندية المتجهة إلى الخليج العربي تبحر أولا إلى مسقط لتجلب منها مياه الشرب العذبة، وتبتاع السمك والفواكه وغيرها من المؤن، فضلا عن ما تقوم به من أنشطة التبادل التجاري. غير أنه في عام 1763م، غرقت إحدى هذه السفن وكانت تدعى »أمستلڤين« على الساحل الجنوبي لشبه الجزيرة العربية، وتحطمت في أمواج قوية متكسرة. ظلت تفاصيل هذه الحادثة غامضة، حتى عثر على مجموعة من المذكرات كتبها أحد مساعدي قبطان السفينة، والذي نجا من الحادثة وهو »كورنيليس إيكس«، حيث كشف عن ملابساتها، وتفاصيل رحلة المشي الطويلة والمضنية التي قطعها الناجون على طول الساحل الصحراوي القائظ.
